Caring for a Newborn Maine Coon Litter: Week 3 The Wobbly, Wonderful Transition
Aurora’s litter of Maine Coon kittens born March 5, 2026
There’s something especially magical about week three. This is the week our kittens begin to transform from tiny, dependent babies into curious little explorers. They’re no longer just sleeping and nursing—they’re waking up to the world.
From Crawling to Toddling
At the start of the week, movement is still a bit… questionable. By the end of the week, they’re toddling. Wobbly, determined, and often a little clumsy, they begin to find their footing. Their personalities are expressed even more this week through the way they move—bold, cautious, playful, or thoughtful.
Finding Their Voices
Week three is when kittens discover their voices. Soft, squeaky meows begin to replace silent rooting. They begin calling for mom, responding to littermates, and expressing curiosity. Here is a video of little Cortland trying out his meow: https://www.facebook.com/share/r/1DKnVN5G8d/
Still Rooted in Mom
Despite all this growth, they are still very much dependent on their mother. They continue nursing and rely on her for warmth, comfort, and security. At Heritage Springs Maine Coons, we prioritize strong maternal bonds to build confident, emotionally stable kittens.
The End of the Kitten Tent Stage
Week three marks the final chapter of life in the kitten tent. As mobility increases, they will soon transition to a larger, more secure area that allows more exploration while maintaining safety. It was evident this morning that this transition is imminent when all five of Aurora’s kittens popped out of their tent to greet the day.
The Beginning of Kitten-garten
Week three is also the start of Kitten-garten—our Heritage Springs Maine Coons signature early socialization program. This is as much fun for us as it is for the kittens. If you have read any of our reviews, you know that our kittens are known for being extremely well socialized before going home. We take great pride in our babies being excellent companions and that all starts with Kitten-garten.
We begin with short handling sessions away from mom and allow the kittens to explore new environments together as a litter. This builds confidence, curiosity, and emotional resilience. It also gives us more photo opportunities so watch the Facebook page for updates!

Building the Foundation
Week three is about building the foundation for confident, well-adjusted cats. Every interaction matters, and every experience shapes the cat they will become. Wobbly walks, tiny voices, and that first spark of personality—it never gets old.
Little Cortland was the first to meow and the first to walk- he is a very determined kitten!
