What’s New at Heritage Springs Maine Coons

I am so excited to share two pieces of excellent news!

First, Fiona had her stitches removed on Friday afternoon and our vet said she doesn’t need any additional surgeries! This was amazing news because a few days before, we were told a surgery to debride tissue and re-suture the site was very much still a possibility. We are so grateful for everyone’s support and well-wishes throughout everything Fiona went through during the last month. To learn more about Fiona’s story, click here.

Second, Eepie finished his observation period for Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) with flying colors! FIP has an 84-day treatment period followed by an 84-day observation period. Once the observation period is complete, a cat is considered “cured”. Eepie Mouse went to the specialist he saw for FIP for his final checkup after his observation period and she said he looks fantastic- he is officially a “normal” cat! Kitty Care Tip

With the warmer weather, Maine Coons and other long-haired cats are shedding like crazy. It’s important to brush your cat more often to remove the extra coat so it doesn’t become tangled in your cat’s fur and become matted.

First, feel your cat to see if there are any matted areas. If not, you can quickly brush them out to remove loose fur. Sometimes a Churu treat is useful if they don’t particularly love spa time.

If you find matted areas, you can use a matt splitter to help break up the mat or you can work at it with a brush. I typically do both. It can also help to use a detangling spray (I stay away from aerosols because all of my cats hate the sound they make).

If you have really difficult matts, you may opt to shave the spot. I like these quiet clippers.
